In 2001, the Sphinx Organization joined forces with the League of American Orchestras to execute and oversee its Music
Assistance Fund for minority classical musicians. The Fund was
established by the New York Philharmonic in 1965 but administered by the
League since 1994. Since its inception, more than 1,500 musicians have received MAF
scholarship support. Among the distinguished artists who have
participated in the program are Wynton Marsalis, Ralph Curry (of the
Cleveland Orchestra); Jerome Ashby (of the New York Philharmonic) and
Owen Young (of the Boston Symphony). Today, all 18 of the Sphinx
Semi-Finalists receive scholarships through this program each year.
College/Conservatory Scholarships Division Most recently, Sphinx developed the college/conservatory division of the MAF program, through which several of the top institutions around the country provide a full tuition scholarship to eligible Sphinx Semi-Finalists. Other Scholarship Resources The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation helps young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education, most notably through some of the largest and most competitive scholarships available in the US. The graduate scholarships include a special emphasis on students in the arts and are worth up to $50,000 per year. Students interested in the foundation’s scholarships must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their undergraduate institution or community college.
