 What is Musical Chairs?
The Musical Chairs program encourages individuals, families and other organizations to become involved in helping to change the face of classical music. It offers an opportunity to sponsor a chair in the Sphinx Symphony and have the chair be named after you!
Why is the Sphinx Symphony important?
Nationally, less then 4% of orchestras are Black or Latino. Through the Sphinx Symphony, we are working to change these statistics. The Sphinx Symphony is the unique all African-American and Latino orchestra comprised of top professionals from around the country. We have assembled a superb group of musicians, representing orchestras of Cleveland, New Jersey, Atlanta, Houston, New Mexico, Oregon, and others. This ensemble fulfills a unique multi-purpose role: its members serve as mentors to our young musicians both on stage and through providing master classes and lectures, in addition to promoting works by Black and Latino composers during the Sphinx Finals Concert.
How to become involved
To sponsor a chair in the Sphinx Symphony you can make a secure online payment (partial or in full) from our website (enter the amount you want to pay in the One-Time Gift section, then on the Review Payment page, indicate in the Message to Seller box which chair you would like to purchase) or contact Tania McGee, Executive Director, at or 313-877-9100, ext 703
- $1,000 commitment to sponsor a section chair
- $1,100 to sponsor a principal chair
- $1,500 to sponsor a chair in the Harlem Quartet
Payments can be made in installments OR in full.
How will I be recognized?
- Specific Orchestra chair named after you or any one you might want to honor
- Orchestra roster mention of your chair name at all Sphinx Symphony events, including the Honors and Finals Concerts
- Recognition of your involvement in the credits of the Sphinx Finals Concert broadcast (a national radio and television broadcast audience of over 2 million on PBS and NPR)
- An invitation for you and a guest to attend the private Sphinx Symphony orchestra dinner and recital
- 2 complimentary reserved VIP seats for the Sphinx Finals Concert
- Complimentary copy of the Broadcast Finals Concert Video (includes your chair name in credits)
