NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

Experience Sphinx’s 20th Anniversary Celebration

Thanks to our partners at Detroit Public Television, Sphinx is able to share videos of our 20th annual Sphinx Competition Finals Concert on February 12, 2017. The three Senior Division finalists of the competition took the stage at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall (Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center) along with the all-Black and Latino Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, and special guest the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club. The SSO and Glee Club performed a newly commissioned version of “The Seven Last Words of the Unarmed” by composer Joel Thompson, then were joined by Karen Clark Sheard and jessica Care moore to close the concert with John Legend’s “Glory.” See the videos of these powerful performances below!

Robert Smith presented with Sphinx Trailblazer Award

During the October 20 Sphinx Virtuosi performance at Carnegie Hall, the Sphinx Organization was thrilled to present Robert Smith with the first Sphinx Trailblazer Award, in recognition for his commitment to social justice and the arts. The award was presented by Aaron Dworkin, Dr. William H. Carson, and Afa S. Dworkin.

I am just in awe of what Sphinx has accomplished, but even more excited about its future.

Yo-Yo Ma

Cellist, virtuoso, and orchestral composer

I don’t think a day has gone by that the Sphinx family hasn’t played some kind of role in my life…This fine organization is truly a game-changer.

Danielle Belen

Associate Professor, University of Michigan/Faculty, Colburn School

I have grown because of Sphinx and will continue to grow propelled by the tremendous support of the Sphinx community. Where I will go is undetermined, but I know I will go far. Sphinx has ensured it.
