Sphinx Medals of Excellence is a program which awards $50,000 career grants to extraordinary
emerging classical artists of color, who, early in their professional career demonstrate the following qualities: artistic excellence, outstanding work ethic, a spirit of determination, and ongoing commitment to leadership.
The selection criteria emphasize artistic merit and track record, with an added consideration of having a transformative impact on the potential of candidates’ careers. Deference is given to those whose careers are in the first 10 years of prominence, though exceptions may be made in extraordinary cases.
The awards were bestowed at the official Sphinx Medals of Excellence luncheon and honorees were celebrated at a black-tie private dinner in Washington, D.C.
“We are honored to celebrate these exceptional musicians. Individually, they exhibit authenticity, commitment and true artistic leadership, which is so essential to Sphinx’s mission and our field, as a whole.” said Sphinx President and Artistic Director, Afa S. Dworkin.
The 2017 Sphinx Medals of Excellence Celebration will take place on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 and our 2017 honorees will be announced soon.
