José Francisco Vásquez Cano

Mexican composer and pianist, born October 4, 1895/6, died December 19, 1961.


José Francisco Vásquez Cano was born in Arandas, Jalisco, on October 4, 1895. He attended the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico City, where he studied piano with Ignacio and César del Castillo, cello with Horacio Ávila, and composition and theory with Rafael J. Tello and Julián Carrillo. He contributed to the foundation of the Escuela Libre de Música y Declamación in 1920. He founded the Compañía Mexicana de Opera in 1926, where he produced operas by notable Mexican composers, as well as some of his own award-winning operas.

He also had an extensive career in education and conducting. He taught courses at the School of Music at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, and also had experience conducting numerous symphony orchestras. He composed almost 200 works, including eight operas, five symphonies, and numerous instrumental concertos, ballets, and cantatas. He won many awards for his compositions, direction, and musicianship.
