Kayla Cabrera

Cuban-American violist Kayla Cabrera began her music studies at age fourteen. Acclaimed for her “ability to make her instrument sing with a rich, soulful sound” (Peninsula Pulse), Kayla has had several recent engagements as a chamber musician and soloist, including performances at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, New World Center, Ravinia Festival, on WFMT Chicago’s

“Introductions”, and with the Joliet and Birch Creek Symphony Orchestras. A member of the renowned Sphinx Virtuosi, Kayla has received gold medals at the M-Prize, Saint Paul String Quartet, and Enkor competitions, and a silver medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music competition. A recent graduate of The Juilliard School, Kayla is pursuing her masters degree at the Yale School of Music under the tutelage of Ettore Causa, and has previously studied with Heidi Castleman, Misha Amory, Roland Vamos, and Matthew Mantell. In addition to her musical pursuits, Kayla is passionate about social justice and increasing diversity in the arts, beading, connecting to her afro-indigenous culture, and spending time with her feisty Scottish Terrier named Maizy.
