Sphinx Virtuosi | Meet Us | Luis Bellorín

Luis Bellorín

Venezuelan-American violist Luis Eduardo Bellorín has built a career on artistic curiosity and deep chamber music partnerships, with playing described as having an "impossibly sweet tone" (San Francisco Classical Voice).

As a founding member of the Thalea String Quartet (2014–2021), Luis performed across North America, Europe, and China in venues including the Kennedy Center, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, and the Britten Studio at Snape Maltings. With Thalea, he served as the first quartet-in-residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and as Associated Artist at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium, under the mentorship of the Artemis Quartet. Kronos Quartet's David Harrington praised the ensemble's "rare, magnetic quartet sense." As a chamber musician, Luis has also performed with the Sphinx Virtuosi and Alarm Will Sound, and shared the stage with members of the Emerson, Borromeo, Brentano, and St. Lawrence String Quartets, composer Caroline Shaw, and violist Lawrence Power. His
commitment to new music has led to collaborations with composers including Anthony R. Green, Paola Prestini, and Ted Hearne.

Education is just as central to Luis's work. He has led workshops and
masterclasses at institutions including the Frost School of Music, Boston
Conservatory at Berklee, and the University of Maryland. In 2021, the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association honored Thalea with the Ann Divine Educator Award for outstanding educational programming. With Thalea, Luis was also the 2019–20 Ernst Stiefel Quartet-in-Residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and a top prize winner at both the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition. He is a recipient of a 2023 Sphinx Organization MPower Artist Grant.

Since 2021, Luis has called Austin, Texas home, where he performs with the Austin Symphony and co-founded Austin Unconducted and Chamber Academy Austin.
