Sergio Berlioz

Mexican composer, conductor, and musicologist, born July 26, 1963.

Born in Mexico City, Mexico, Sergio Berlioz is a composer, conductor, and musicologist whose work transpires from past experiences. Rather than adhering to a specific style of composition, Berlioz composes for the pure enjoyment of discovering music he feels delighted with. He studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of INBA in Mexico City with Kurt Redel and has taken classes with Eduardo Diazmuñoz and Xavier González as well.

Between 1980 and 1981, Berlioz was a personal assistant to Kurt Redel while stationed with the Munich Pro Arte Orchestra. He would later become assistant to Leonard Bernstein during his time with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in 1982. Berlioz has received many awards, some of which include the Leoš Janáček Medal, Premio Nacional de Periodismo and the Premio Instituto Cultural México-Israel (2003). In 1986, he founded the Ensamble Contemporáneo Independiente and later went on to host “Biblioteca Pública” on Mexican radio.

His compositions have been performed internationally, and include a diverse selection of symphonies, chamber music, symphonic poems, and concertos. His fifth and sixth symphonies were both commissioned by the State of Puebla government. He conducts regularly at the Casa Lamm and has also made appearances with the Orquestra Sinfónica, Orquestra Filarmónica del Conservatorio Nacional de Música and the Orquestra de Cámara de la Universidad de Guanajuato. In addition to his composition and conducting experiences, Berlioz is a renowned musicologist, having written books and essays discussing the benefits of music in education and musical and cultural issues in multiple countries.
